The South African Mint first issued 1oz Silver Krugerrands as a limited edition Premium Uncirculated proof in 2017 to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the original gold Krugerrand (the first mass production gold bullion coin to enter the world market). This debut release proved to be highly popular, prompting the Mint to issue a bullion version the following year aimed squarely at silver investors rather than collectors.
The Silver Krugerrand has established its prominent place among the other world-renowned and recognised bullion coins like the American Silver Eagle, the Canadian Silver Maple and the British Silver Britannia. In fact it is now one of the three top-selling coins on the South African market and took only three years from its release date to reach this milestone.
Like the gold version, the obverse (or face) of the coin was designed by Coert Steynberg and displays the iconic South African antelope, the springbok. The reverse features a design by Otto Shultz of the bust of legendary South African soldier and statesman Paul Kruger, the namesake of our most famous National Park.
This Heritage Month, make the choice to own Silver Krugerrands and claim your share of South Africa’s vast reserves of mineral wealth.
